WHAT IS THE ICAC-OXON HILL FOOD PANTRY?
In 1969 a group of area churches of all denominations banded to work on problems and challenges affecting the community.
At the time, drug use was a problem for some young adults in the community. This affiliated group was organized as the Interfaith Community Action Council, Inc. (ICAC). It was organized as a non-profit with a board consisting of a member from each of the constituent churches. Eventually their efforts led to an active counseling center to deal with the drug problem.
As time went on, other programs larger in scope and many sponsored by government entities came on the scene and ICAC looked for other areas of concern. Studies showed that the two major social concerns were hunger and homelessness.
These are still concerns 56 years later. Also, in 1984 the ICAC established the Oxon Hill Food Pantry. The Pantry's mission is to provide an emergency supply of food to those in need. The Pantry is a major asset to the community. With recent federal employment cuts and layoffs and couniting challenging economic environment impacting the lives of area families, the need continues. As the Pantry celebrates its 41 years of service to the community in 2025, we continue to serve hundreds of families in Southern Prince George's County.
